LED Luraline Competition

Sketch Series 4

This is an incandescent bulb locate in the living area of my apartment. The fixture provides ambient lighting at different levels. The luminaire contains five bulbs, that can all be turned on at once or at different times. This light source provides enough light for tasks to be done within this space. Or just to illuminate the room. The bulbs within this fixture bring out warm tones in the illuminated space. I feel this fixture provides the appropriate amount of light needed in the space.

Sketch Series 4

This is an HID fixture located on the third floor studio space in the Gatewood building. This fixture provides focal lighting. Since this bulb is part of a track system. The fixture is used to highlight work displayed throughout the space. This luminaire brings out warm tones to the areas it illuminates. I feel the HID bulb is appropriate withit the studio space. The luminaire provides the right amount of light for work to be displayed.

Sketch Series 4

This is a Fluorescent fixture located in the digital lab. This fixture provides ambient lighting. The Luminaire contains one fluorescent bulb to illuminate the space. This light source provide bright light conducive to working in a space. The fluorescent fixture brings out the white in colors. I feel that a bright light is needed in areas where work is completed. Yet this fixture can also create visual fatigue and head aches.

Color Schemes

The color schemes I chose to focus on were Analogous, Monochromatic, and Complementary. The former project I altered was of a commercial office space.

Sketch Series 3 [Grocery Store]

Fluorescent
lighting creating an ambient glow can been seen in this grocery store setting. This particular bulb created the colors within the fabric to look very dull and subdued, compared to the other light sources.

Sketch Series 3 [Retail]

Fluorescent lighting was used within the retail setting. This particular bulb brought out more of the warmer colors in the fabric. Creating a contrast between cool and warm colors in each fabric swatch.

Sketch Series 3 [Library]

Fluorescent lighting was within the library space. This particular fluorescent bulb brought our the purples and blues in the fabric swatches.

Sketch Series 3 [Residence]

An incandescent bulb directly lit the fabric swatches in my apartment. This light source brought our the bright yellow colors in each fabric.

Daylight Model

Our group chose to place our space on the 'My Sisters' House' site in Eastside park.
The front area of the box is a community area. Each layer leads your eye back to an intimate area.
Alot of light is entering in to the community area and is more subdued in the intimate space.
The amount of light within this space changes throughout the day due to the strategic location of the windows.

Sketch Series 2 [Resturant]

A few different types of lights are used such as track lighting, recess, and direct lighting. Track lighting is used to highlight sales areas, such as the cafe and bakery menus. Recess lights are used to brighten pathways and direct people through this space. Direct lighting is used in the seating areas. Creating a subtle glow over each table.
Each type of light contrasts in brightness. This creates a gradient from bright to dim within this space.
I feel the lighting used in Panera is very successful.

Sketch Series 2 [Retail]

Fluorescent lighting is mainly used to create an ambient affect within this retail setting. LED lights are used to highlight certain areas and advertisements.
Slight reflectivity is seen in the flooring created by the fluorescent light sources.
The quality of light is persistent throughout the space. The edges of the store are darker, with slight color created by the LED fixtures.

Sketch Series 2 [Stone]

An indirect light source is used which provides dull ambient lighting creating a dim space. Small windows provide a minimal amount of natural light in the space also. The overall quality of light needs to change to provide a higher level of brightness within the lobby.

Sketch Series 2 [Museum]

Many different light sources can be seen in this space. Sconces, Recess, some fluorescent, track lighting, and interesting chandeliers. There is a good quality of light overall.
Reflectivity is seen in the flooring within this space. Some glare is seen in areas with large windows due to the type of flooring used.
Light patterns are persistent within the space. Natural to dark lighting is used in the entry areas. Bright task lighting is used to highlight displayed works of art.

Sketch Series 1 [week 4]

This picture was taken on the first week of march around 11am. The amount of light in the space has changed from a month earlier at this time.

Sketch Series 1 [week 3]

This picture was taken around 4pm in the New Science Building lobby. A maximum amount of light is penetrated into the space. This creates a great amout of brightness and warmth.

Artificial Light Model

As a group we created an affect within a "space" using direct light. When the liquid within this glass is illuminated with light, it reflects onto the back wall. This creates a subtle glow within the box. Also, when light shines onto the broken pieces of blue glass they are also reflected onto the back wall. We considered the affects light has on transparent objects.

Sketch Series 1 [week 2]

This picture was taken around noon in the New Science Building lobby. This is when plenty of light filters into this space. Reflectivity occurs in the floor of this space due to lighting conditions.

Sketch Series 1 [week 1]

This is the lobby area in the New Science Building. Therefore it is a public area with alot of traffic. Yet many people use the space to read or converse in. Plenty of natural light flows into the space creating brightness without glare. Subtle recess lights are used to brighten the space as well.

Group Lighting Evaluation

Our group chose to evaluate the lighting qualities of the Gatewood lobby. This area can also be considered the foyer or lobby for the Gatewood building. The facade of the entry area is a full glass window, stretching from the ground up to the ceiling. Alot of natural light fills the lobby area because of the large glass windows. A few focal lights can be recognized in this space as well.

Inspiring Light

This picture was taken in my backyard. Natural light is seen streaming through the branches of a tree. The natural light filters through the tree into a shaded area. I find much of my inspiration in nature when I am designing.
